Guide to Child Participation in Advocacy

The Child Participation in Advocacy guide offers child rights advocates and practitioners extensive resources on how to ensure that children’s participation in advocacy activities is meaningful, safe, and inclusive. Rooted in the lived experiences and wealth of knowledge of 6 child rights organizations, this guide aims to provide practical guidance and best practices on how to integrate child participation in a meaningful manner when designing, implementing, and evaluating advocacy activities and programmes at the community, national, and regional levels.

In this guide, you will find:

  • – Definitions and minimum standards for meaningful, safe, and inclusive child participation in advocacy activities and programmes;
  • – Research, references, and how-to guides to support readers in their journey to make children’s participation meaningful, safe, and inclusive;
  • – Case studies and best practices from the lived experiences of Joining Forces’ six member agencies;
  • – Frameworks and approaches to meaningfully and safely engage children throughout the entire advocacy process.

Joining Forces has long championed the rights of children to be active participants in decision-making spaces that ultimately affect their lives. In 2024, Joining Forces launched A Seat at the Table, which emphasized the urgency of investing in children’s participation as a cornerstone of their rights while also highlighting the transformative power of children’s voices in shaping policies and drive systematic change.
