Joining Forces for Child Protection in Emergencies / South Sudan

Angeth

Angeth* is 9 months old and was born on October 23, 2022 in Bor to a single vulnerable and mentally ill mother after her family was displaced by flooding in Maar, Twic East County, Jonglei State, South Sudan. After arriving in Bor County, the family first resided in Pakwau at the Adventist church compound, where they received assistance with feeding and housing for several months.

Based on the vulnerability of the mother, who is mentally ill and an elderly grandmother, she is exposed to a variety of issues such as shelter, sickness, food, clothing, and other basic necessities; as a result, she was identified and registered in the Case Management process, and she was provided with all necessary services in accordance with the case plan.

Angeth is her mother’s fourth child, and she is being cared for by her 65-year-old grandmother, after the death of her firstborn due to malnutrition during the 2013 South Sudan conflict.

However, the child and family have been facing a lack of resources, proper shelter, sleeping materials such as mosquito nets, bedsheets, blankets, soap, sleeping mat, children’s clothing, and milk to feed this infant since her mother couldn’t breastfeed her, because the child’s mother could disappear for days without returning to the child due to a mental disorder that has existed since childhood, according to the child’s grandmother.

JF-CPiE intervened and was able to provide basic needs such as soap, milk, mosquito net, bedsheets, sleeping mat, and blanket for the child and family in response to the above protection concerns affecting the child’s survival and development, as well as psychological support for the grandmother.

The family was recently recommended to the ECHO initiative for cash support to satisfy other basic requirements.

Because of the intervention through the JF-CPIE Project, the previous protection needs of this child were concerning, and as of today, after providing all of the support, including Positive parenting for the grandmother, the conditions have significantly improved as a result of the interventions JF-CPiE has implemented through case management processes.

Angeth’s mother says: “I’m hopeful that the impact of referral for cash assistance, which is set to begin in a few weeks, aims to solve some of the problems.”
